A type of electron microscope that scans the surface of a sample using a beam of electrons. These systems are characterised with producing high-resolution images with a large depth-of-field and capable of reaching extremely high magnifications. SEMs can be outfitted with an optional elemental analyser for determining the chemical makeup of a target.
